Julius Maada Bio is the current President of Sierra Leone, having assumed office on April 4, 2018. Born on May 12, 1964, in Tihun, Sierra Leone, President Bio has enjoyed a distinguished career in both the military and politics.
President Bio attended the Bo Government Secondary School and later pursued further studies at the Njala University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Sociology. His academic journey continued with a Master’s degree in International Affairs from the American University in Washington, D.C.
Before entering politics, President Bio had an illustrious military career, rising to the rank of Brigadier in the Sierra Leone Armed Forces. He played a pivotal role in the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) military junta, which came to power in 1996. President Bio served as the Head of State of Sierra Leone from January 16, 1996, to March 29, 1996, during which time he initiated significant reforms aimed at restoring democracy and stability to the country.
After transitioning from the military, President Bio ventured into politics, where he sought to bring about positive change and progress for his nation. He founded the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and became its presidential candidate, ultimately winning the presidential election in 2018.
As President, Julius Maada Bio has been committed to advancing socio-economic development, promoting good governance, and fostering peace and stability in Sierra Leone. His administration has focused on various initiatives aimed at improving education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities for all citizens.
